What to see on the hill
- The viewing platform. Almaty spread out below, the Zailiysky Alatau behind you, and on clear days the plain stretching north for 50 km.
- The TV tower. A 372-metre Soviet-era structure and the city's landmark, built to withstand major earthquakes. It is closed to visitors but dominates every photo.
- The Beatles monument. A bronze bench with John, Paul, George and Ringo, unveiled in 2007; the first monument to the band in the former Soviet Union.
- The apple fountain. Almaty means "father of apples", and the giant apple sculpture is the city's favourite photo stop.
- The park. Ferris wheel, alpine coaster, small zoo and petting area, souvenir stalls and restaurants with terrace views.

When to go
Summer evenings are the classic choice: warm air, long light and the city switching on beneath you. Autumn brings the clearest views of the mountains after the summer haze. Winter is cold on the hill but the snow-covered peaks behind the city are at their best, and the park is quiet. Spring is green and pleasant, with occasional low cloud.
Weekdays are noticeably calmer than weekends, when locals fill the cable car and the park with their families.

- It is a few degrees cooler on the hill; bring a light jacket for the evening
- Toilets and cafés are near the main deck; an ATM is by the entrance, but small cash is handy for stalls
