Big Almaty Lake tour itinerary
- 10:00 Pickup at your hotel or apartment in Almaty.
- 10:20 Enter the Big Almaty gorge and the Ile-Alatau National Park gate; the road climbs through apple orchards and then spruce forest.
- 10:40 Photo stop at the Ayusai visitor area or the first bend with a view back over the city and the plain.
- 11:15 Arrive at the lake viewpoints at 2,511 m. Time for photos from the road and the marked platforms above the water, with Bolshoy Almatinsky Peak and Sovetov Peak behind it.
- 12:00 Optional drive higher towards the Tian Shan Astronomical Observatory and the Kosmostantsiya road for wider views, when the road is open.
- 13:00 Return drive with a stop at a mountain café for tea or lunch (own expense).
- 14:00–15:00 Drop-off at your hotel.

What makes the lake worth the drive
Big Almaty Lake fills a glacial basin 2,511 m above sea level, held back by a natural moraine dam. Its colour shifts through the season and the day, from deep emerald in early summer to pale milky blue when glacier meltwater arrives, and it is ringed by three peaks: Bolshoy Almatinsky (3,681 m), Ozyorny (4,110 m) and Sovetov (4,317 m).
What makes it exceptional is the contrast with the city. You leave a street of cafés and trolleybuses, drive for fifty minutes, and stand in high-alpine terrain with glaciers in view. Higher up the same road sits the Tian Shan Astronomical Observatory, built in the 1950s and still working, and the old Kosmostantsiya cosmic-ray station near the Kyrgyz border ridge.
Best time to visit and what to bring
June to September is the easiest and warmest period, with the road fully open and green slopes around the water. May and October are quieter, with snow still on the peaks and the strongest colours in the water. Winter is spectacular, with the lake frozen and the forest under snow, but the last section can be icy and we use a 4x4; occasionally the road closes for a day or two after heavy snowfall.
Mornings are calmer and give mirror-like water; afternoons usually bring wind and, in summer, clouds building over the ridge.
Bring with you
- A warm layer and windproof jacket — it is 10–15 °C cooler than in the city
- Sunglasses and sunscreen; UV is strong at 2,500 m
- Comfortable shoes, though there is little walking
- Passport or ID: there is a checkpoint on the upper road near the border zone
- Water and a snack; there are no shops at the lake
Fitness level: very easy. The viewpoints are metres from where the vehicle parks, which makes this the most accessible mountain trip from Almaty for families and older travellers. Take the altitude gently if you arrived in Kazakhstan the same day.
Frequently asked questions
Can I swim, kayak or go down to the shore?
No. The lake is part of Almaty's drinking water supply, so swimming, boating and walking down to the water are prohibited. Visitors stay at the marked viewpoints above the lake, which is where the best photographs are taken anyway.
Is Big Almaty Lake always open to visitors?
Usually, but not always. Access to the upper road is sometimes restricted by the authorities at short notice, and heavy snow can close it in winter. We check before every departure; if the lake is not reachable we offer another route in the valley or a full refund.
How long does the trip take?
Four to five hours door to door, including about 50 minutes of driving each way and an hour or more at the viewpoints. It fits easily into a morning or an afternoon.
Is it suitable for families and seniors?
Yes, it is the most accessible mountain destination near Almaty: the viewpoints are right by the parking area and there is almost no walking. At 2,500 m some people feel the altitude, so move slowly and drink water.
What kind of vehicle do you use?
Most of the road is paved and a car or minivan is fine from spring to autumn. In winter, after rain or when the upper road is rough, we use a 4x4 for safety.
Are there cafés or toilets at the lake?
Not at the lake itself. There are cafés and toilets lower down the valley, at the Ayusai visitor area and along the road, and we stop there on the way back.
Can I combine it with another tour the same day?
Yes. The usual combinations are Alma Arasan hot springs in the same valley, or a city tour, Kok Tobe or the Green Bazaar in the afternoon. Tell us what you would like and we will plan the day.
