Issyk Lake tour itinerary
- 09:00 Pickup at your hotel or apartment in Almaty.
- 09:30 Drive east through the foothills and the town of Esik, with a short stop on the way.
- 10:30 Optional visit to the Issyk State Historical and Cultural Museum, built beside the kurgan field where the Golden Man was excavated in 1969 (entry paid on site).
- 11:30 Enter the Issyk gorge and climb the winding road through spruce forest to the lake.
- 12:00 Issyk Lake. Viewing platform above the turquoise water, walk down to the shore, and the story of the 1963 mudflow that emptied the lake in a single afternoon.
- 13:30 Picnic by the water or lunch at a café in the gorge (own expense).

The lake that disappeared
On 7 July 1963 a glacial lake burst high in the mountains and sent a mudflow down the Issyk gorge. In a few hours it broke the natural dam and emptied a lake that had stood for eight thousand years, sweeping away the holiday resort on its shore. The valley was left as a grey scar; photographs from the 1960s show a bowl of stone where the water had been.
The lake has since refilled, partly naturally and partly with engineering help, and the forest has grown back around it. Standing on the viewing platform today you see turquoise water and spruce slopes; what you do not see is that the whole scene is a rebuilt one, which is exactly what makes it interesting when someone tells you the story on the spot.
The Golden Man
Six kilometres from the lake, on the plain below, lies a field of Saka burial mounds. In 1969 archaeologists opened one of them and found the remains of a young warrior buried in a suit of more than four thousand gold plaques. The Golden Man became the symbol of independent Kazakhstan; he stands on the monument in Republic Square in Almaty and appears on the country's banknotes.
The museum at the site displays a replica of the costume, the grave goods and the excavation itself. It is a short and worthwhile stop on the way to the lake, especially if you are also visiting the Central State Museum in the city.

Best time to visit and what to bring
May and June bring meltwater, the fullest lake and green slopes. July and August are warm and good for a picnic day, with more visitors at weekends. September and October give golden forest and the clearest water; this is the photographers' season. The tour runs from April to November; in winter the gorge road is usually closed by snow.
The lake sits in a narrow valley, so morning light stays soft and the water is at its most reflective before midday.

How far is Issyk Lake from Almaty?
About 80 km, roughly 1.5 hours each way, which makes it one of the easier mountain lakes to reach. The whole tour takes around 9 hours with stops.
Can I swim in Issyk Lake?
Swimming is not recommended. The water comes from glaciers and stays very cold, the shore is steep in places, and the lake is part of a protected area. Most visitors enjoy it from the platform and the shore path.
Is the Golden Man museum included?
The visit is optional and the entry ticket is paid on site. Tell us when you book and we will build the stop into your schedule.
What vehicle do you use?

Yes, the two are on the same road east of Almaty and fit into one long private day: the waterfalls of Turgen in the morning and Issyk in the afternoon, or the other way around.
