Charyn Canyon in photos
What you see at Charyn Canyon
Charyn Canyon is a 154 km gorge cut by the Charyn River through the red sandstone of the Kazakh steppe. The part everyone visits is the Valley of Castles: a 3 km stretch where erosion has left towers, arches and walls that really do look like a ruined city. From the rim the towers are below you; from the floor they rise 150–300 metres on both sides. The rock changes colour through the day, from pale ochre in the morning to deep red before sunset.
The canyon is often called the Grand Canyon of Kazakhstan, and the comparison is fair in shape if not in scale. It is younger and narrower, but you can walk through the middle of it in an hour, which is something the Grand Canyon does not offer. The park also protects the Sogdian ash grove, a relic forest that survived the ice age, in a separate valley further along the river.
Best time to visit Charyn Canyon
| Season | What to expect |
|---|---|
| April–June | The best months. Green steppe, wildflowers, 18–28 °C in the canyon, long daylight. Busiest on weekends. |
| July–August | Hot and exposed, 30–38 °C on the canyon floor with almost no shade. We start early and spend more time by the river. |
| September–October | Excellent: warm days, cool mornings, clear air and the strongest colours in the rock. Fewer visitors after mid-September. |
| November–March | Quiet and dramatic, sometimes with snow on the red rock. Cold (−5 to +10 °C) but the road is open and the canyon is nearly empty. |
For photography, the first two hours after sunrise and the last two before sunset give the deepest colour. On a private tour we can leave Almaty at 05:00 to be at the rim for sunrise.
What to bring
Essentials
- Closed shoes with grip; the path is gravel and loose in places
- Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen — there is no shade on the rim
- At least 1.5 litres of water per person in summer
- A windproof layer; the canyon funnels wind at any season
- Cash in tenge for lunch, the shuttle van and souvenirs
- Passport or ID — the road passes near the border zone and checks are possible
Good to know
- Fitness level: easy. The descent is gradual; the climb back takes about 30 minutes or you can use the shuttle.
- Toilets and a snack kiosk are at the main gate and parking area only.
- Mobile coverage works at the gate but drops inside the canyon.
- Drones need prior permission from the park administration; tell us in advance.
- Stay on the marked paths and away from the edges; the sandstone crumbles.
Frequently asked questions
How far is Charyn Canyon from Almaty?
About 200 km to the Valley of Castles entrance, which takes 3 to 3.5 hours each way on paved roads. That is why the tour is a full day of 8 to 10 hours in total.
How long is the walk in the canyon?
About 1.5 km each way, 3 km in total. The path down is gradual and takes 30–40 minutes with photo stops. Walking back up takes about 30 minutes, or you can take the shuttle van for a small fee paid on site.
Is the tour suitable for seniors and children?
Yes. The path is wide and clear, without climbing or scrambling. Families with small children and older travellers usually walk down, rest by the river and take the shuttle back up. On a private tour we adjust the pace and rest stops.
Can I combine Charyn Canyon with other places?
Yes. The most popular combination is the 3 Canyons tour with Black Canyon and Moon Canyon on the same day. Over two days you can add Kolsai and Kaindy Lakes, which lie further along the same road. Ask us for a two-day itinerary.
Are drones allowed in Charyn Canyon?
Only with prior authorisation from the park administration; unauthorised flights can bring a fine. Tell us before the tour and your guide will check the current rules and help with permission where possible.
Are there toilets, cafés or shops in the canyon?
Basic toilets and small snack kiosks are at the main gate and the parking area. Inside the canyon there is an eco-park café by the river in season, but nothing else, so bring water and snacks.
How do I book and pay?
Send your dates and group size on WhatsApp or through the contact form. We confirm within 24 hours. Group tours usually need no deposit; private tours are confirmed with a deposit, and the balance is paid on the day of the tour.
What is the cancellation policy?
You can change or cancel up to 72 hours before departure. For private tours a partial refund of the deposit (70–90%) applies depending on costs already paid; later cancellations are non-refundable. If we cancel because of weather or road closures, you get a full refund or a new date.
