Kaindy Lake tour itinerary
- 08:00 Pickup at your hotel or apartment in Almaty.
- 08:15 Drive east through the steppe and the Chilik valley, with a rest stop for breakfast and toilets.
- 12:30 Arrive at Saty village, the gateway to the Kolsai and Kaindy valleys. Short break and transfer to a 4x4 for the mountain track.
- 13:00 The last 12 km up a rough forest track: a bumpy but scenic ride through spruce woods, or the same route on horseback if you prefer.
- 13:45 Kaindy Lake. A short walk from the parking area brings you to the shore, with the drowned trunks and the green water in front of the ridge.
- 13:45–15:15 Time at the lake: the viewpoint above the shore, the path along the water and the meadow at the far end.
- 15:30 Back down to Saty for a late lunch at a local guesthouse (own expense).
- 16:30 Return drive to Almaty.
- 20:00–21:00 Drop-off at your hotel.
This is a long day with about 9 hours of driving plus the 4x4 section. On a private tour we can add Kolsai Lakes on the way back, or split the trip over two days with an overnight in Saty.

Why Kaindy looks the way it does
In January 1911 the Kebin earthquake shook this part of the Tian Shan and brought down a limestone landslide that dammed the Kaindy gorge. Water filled the valley behind the natural dam and drowned a stand of Tian Shan spruce. More than a century later the trunks are still standing: bare and pale above the surface, but preserved underwater by the cold, where the branches and needles remain intact.
The lake is about 400 m long and up to 30 m deep, and the water holds its extraordinary colour because of the limestone. Divers come here for one of the strangest freshwater dives in the world; most visitors simply walk the shore and look down at a forest growing under the water.

Best time to visit Kaindy
June to September is the easiest season: the track is dry, the meadows are green and the water is at its brightest turquoise. May and October are quieter and still beautiful, though the track can be muddy after rain. Winter turns the lake into a white and blue scene with frost on the trunks, and it is a favourite with photographers; access depends entirely on snow on the mountain track, so we confirm the day before.
Midday light is the best here: with the sun high, you can see the submerged trunks continuing below the surface. Early morning gives mirror reflections but keeps the underwater forest hidden.
Bring with you
- Warm layers: the lake sits at about 2,000 m and is cool even in July
- Closed walking shoes with grip; the shore path is rocky and root-crossed
- Rain jacket, since mountain weather turns quickly
- Lunch box and snacks — there is nothing to buy at the lake
- Cash in small tenge notes for the village cafés and horses
- Passport or ID; this valley is near the Kyrgyz border
Fitness level: easy. The walk from the 4x4 parking to the shore takes 10–15 minutes. The 4x4 section is bumpy and not recommended for travellers with serious back or neck problems.
Frequently asked questions
Why do you need a 4x4 for Kaindy Lake?
The last 12 km from Saty village is an unpaved forest track with river crossings and steep sections. Ordinary cars cannot pass it, so we change to a 4x4 (usually a UAZ) for that part; the ride takes about 40 minutes each way and is included in the tour.
Can I ride a horse instead?
Yes, local horses are available in Saty and take the same track to the lake. It is slower but a memorable way to arrive. Paid on site; tell us in advance so we can arrange it.
Do I need a special permit?
No permit is needed for a normal visit; the national park entrance fee is included in the tour. Drone flights or professional filming need a short registration with the ranger office, and your guide can help on site.
Can I swim in Kaindy Lake?
Swimming is not recommended. The water stays around 6 °C all year and the bottom is a maze of submerged trunks and branches. Enjoy the view from the marked spots along the shore.
Are there restaurants or toilets at the lake?
No restaurants at the lake itself; there are basic toilets and picnic spots at the parking area, and small cafés near the park entrance and in Saty village in high season. Bring a lunch box and water.
Is there mobile coverage?
Very limited or none once you are in the valley. Download offline maps before you leave Almaty; our guides carry backup communication.
Can I combine Kaindy with Kolsai Lakes in one day?
Yes, and many travellers do, but it makes a 13–14 hour day with about an hour and a half at each lake. If you want to enjoy both without rushing, take a two-day private trip with an overnight in Saty.
