Black Canyon tour itinerary
- 09:00 Pickup at your hotel or apartment in Almaty.
- 09:15 Drive east towards the Charyn River, with one rest stop on the way. The road runs through steppe and low mountain passes; your guide shares the story of the region.
- 12:00 Arrive at Black Canyon. Walk to the main overlooks above the river, then take the short paths between the viewpoints.
- 12:00–14:00 Free time for photos, a short hike along the rim and a rest by the river bends. Walking is light; the best views are close to the car.
- 14:00 Lunch at a local roadside café (own expense) or a picnic you bring with you.
- 14:45 Return drive to Almaty.
- 17:30–18:30 Drop-off at your hotel.

What makes Black Canyon worth the trip
Black Canyon is a stretch of the Charyn River gorge where the walls are made of dark volcanic rock instead of the red sandstone of the famous Valley of Castles. From the rim you look straight down at a green river winding between near-vertical black cliffs, with the steppe stretching to the horizon behind you. Layers in the rock show millions of years of geology in one view.
Unlike Charyn Canyon, Black Canyon has almost no crowds. The viewpoints are a few minutes' walk from the parking area, so the trip suits travellers who want big landscapes without a long hike. Most guests spend 45–90 minutes here; on a private tour you can stay as long as you like or combine it with the other canyons nearby.
Best time to visit and what to bring
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) give mild temperatures and the clearest light. Summer is hot and exposed: start early and bring sun protection. Winter is quiet and dramatic, with snow on the black rock; roads are usually open, and we use 4x4 vehicles when conditions require.
The best light for photos is in the morning and the last two hours before sunset. Wind on the rim can be strong at any season.

- Closed shoes with grip; the ground near the edge is loose gravel

- A windproof layer, even in summer
- Snacks; facilities at the canyon are minimal
- Passport or ID (checkpoints are possible on the road)
Fitness level: basic. Not recommended for travellers with serious balance or heart problems because of the unfenced cliff edges.

Is Black Canyon part of Charyn National Park?
Black Canyon lies close to Charyn Canyon on the same river but is visited separately. Most travellers see it either on this dedicated day trip or as part of our 3 Canyons tour together with Charyn and Moon Canyon. Any entrance fees that apply are included in the tour.
How much time do we spend at Black Canyon?
Around 45–90 minutes is enough for the viewpoints, a short walk along the rim and photos. On a private tour you decide how long to stay.
Is the tour suitable for children and older travellers?
Yes. The viewpoints are a short, mostly flat walk from the car. The rim is unfenced and windy, so children should stay close to adults.
Are there toilets or cafés at the canyon?
Facilities are very limited. We stop at a roadside café for lunch and toilets, and we carry bottled water in the vehicle.
Can I fly a drone at Black Canyon?
Photos are free to take. Drone flights may need permission; tell us in advance and your guide will check the current rules.
How do I book and pay?

What is the cancellation policy?
You can change or cancel up to 72 hours before departure. For private tours a partial refund of the deposit (70–90%) applies depending on costs already paid; later cancellations are non-refundable. If we cancel because of weather or road closures, you get a full refund or a new date.
