The sites are spread far apart across the park, which is why distances inside Altyn Emel add up to another 150–200 km of driving. Seeing all four in one day is possible but makes for a 14-hour trip.
Two ways to do Altyn Emel
One day: the classic route
Singing Dune and Aktau mountains, with Katutau on the way if time allows. A long but manageable day with an early start.

One-day itinerary
- 07:00 Pickup at your hotel or apartment in Almaty.
- 07:15 Drive north-east along the Ili river, past the Kapchagay reservoir, with a breakfast stop on the way.
- 11:00 Park entrance at Basshi: permits checked, short briefing with the rangers.
- 11:45 Singing Dune. Climb the ridge, listen for the hum, and look out over the Ili valley and the Aktau range in the distance.
- 13:30 Picnic lunch in the shade of the park (we can arrange a lunch box; there are no restaurants inside).
- 14:30 Aktau mountains by 4x4: walking between the striped clay hills and the narrow canyons.
- 16:30 Optional stop at Katutau or the Besshatyr mounds, depending on the time of year and daylight.
- 17:00 Return drive to Almaty.
- 20:30–21:30 Drop-off at your hotel.

Wildlife and landscape
Altyn Emel covers 4,600 km² between the Ili river and the Dzungarian Alatau, and it is one of the few places in Central Asia where you can still see kulan, the Asiatic wild ass, running free. The park also holds goitered gazelles, argali sheep, foxes, eagles and vultures. Sightings are a matter of luck and timing: early morning and late afternoon are best, and the open steppe between the sites is where most animals appear.
The landscape changes completely every twenty minutes of driving: sand, then striped clay, then black lava, then flat grass steppe with mounds on the horizon. This variety, rather than any single view, is what makes the long day worth it.
Best time to visit and what to bring
April to early June is ideal: 20–28 °C, green steppe and flowering tulips in April. September and October bring clear air and the warmest colours on the Aktau clay. July and August are very hot, often above 38 °C, with no shade at the dune; we start earlier and shorten the walks. Winter is cold and stark but perfectly possible on dry days, with the best wildlife sightings.
The Singing Dune only sings when the sand is dry, so after rain the sound does not work.

- Hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen; shade is non-existent

Fitness level: easy to moderate. Only the dune climb is demanding; everything else involves short walks from the vehicle.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit for Altyn Emel National Park?
Yes. It is a strictly protected area and every visitor needs an entry permit, issued at the ranger office or through a licensed agency. We arrange the permit and park fees in advance as part of the tour; you only bring your passport.
Can I visit Altyn Emel without a 4x4?
Not sensibly. The tracks to Aktau and Katutau are sandy and uneven and become impassable after rain. Our tours use a 4x4 for the park section.
Can I see all four main sights in one day?
Technically yes, but it means a 12–14 hour day with long drives inside the park. Most guests choose the Singing Dune and Aktau in one day, or take a two-day trip for all four with better light.
Why does the Singing Dune sing?
When dry sand slides down the slope, the grains rub together and the whole dune resonates like a low organ note. It works best in dry, warm weather; after rain it stays silent.
What wildlife can I expect to see?
Kulan (wild asses), goitered gazelles, foxes and birds of prey are all possible, with the best chances early and late in the day. The park enforces strict rules: keep your distance and never feed the animals.
Can I stay overnight inside the park?
Yes, there are basic guesthouses and ranger lodges near the entrance and in some zones, plus guesthouses in Basshi village. We book these for the two-day option.
Is there food inside the park?
No restaurants or shops. We recommend a lunch box, which we can arrange in advance, plus plenty of water.
How do I book and pay?
