Almaty city tour itinerary, hour by hour

  • 09:00 Pickup at your hotel or apartment anywhere in Almaty.

  • 10:30 Museum of Kazakh Folk Musical Instruments (optional entry) in the same park, inside a carved wooden building from 1908.
  • 11:15 Green Bazaar — the city's oldest market. Tasting of horse meat sausage, dried fruit, nuts, local honey and kurt. Good place for souvenirs.

  • 14:00 Republic Square and the Independence Monument, then a drive along Dostyk Avenue past the Presidential Residence.

Why Almaty is worth a full day

Almaty was the capital of Kazakhstan until 1997 and is still the country's largest city and its cultural centre. It sits at about 800 metres above sea level, directly against the wall of the Trans-Ili Alatau range, so snow-capped peaks are visible from almost every street. The city grid was laid out in the 19th century as the Russian fort of Verniy, which is why the historic centre is compact and easy to cover on foot and by car in one day.

What makes the city tour work as a single day is the contrast. In the morning you are in a wooden Orthodox cathedral from 1907 and a Soviet-era market where traders still sell horse meat and kurt the way they did fifty years ago. By the afternoon you are looking down on glass towers and a mountain range from a cable car. The distances between all of this are short — 20 to 30 kilometres in total — so the day feels full rather than rushed.

If Almaty is your first stop in Kazakhstan, this tour is the right way to start: you get the history, the food and the orientation you need before heading out to the mountains and canyons on the following days.

Best time for the city tour and what to bring

Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the most comfortable: mild temperatures, clear air and the best mountain visibility from Kok Tobe. Summer is warm, often 30 °C or more at midday, so we move indoor stops to the hottest hours. Winter is cold but very photogenic, with snow on the peaks behind the city; the cable car and all the stops stay open.

The city tour runs in any weather. Light rain only changes the order of stops — the museums, the bazaar and the cafés work as indoor alternatives. If heavy rain is forecast, you can move the tour to another day at no extra cost.

Bring with you

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Hat and sunglasses in summer
  • A warm layer for the top of Kok Tobe, it is cooler than the city centre
  • Small cash in tenge for the bazaar and small stalls
  • Passport or a copy for museum discounts

Fitness level: easy. Suitable for families with children and older travellers. Tell us in advance if anyone in your group has limited mobility so we can adjust the route.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Almaty city tour suitable for first-time visitors and families with children?

Yes, this is the tour we recommend on a first day in Almaty. Distances between stops are short, the walking is flat and easy, and there are cafés, shade and rest areas at every stop. Children usually enjoy the cable car and the park at the top of Kok Tobe most.

What languages does the guide speak?

Our guides work in English, Russian and Turkish. Hindi and Arabic speaking guides can be arranged on request — please mention your preferred language when you write to us so we can confirm availability for your date.

Are the Kok Tobe cable car and museum tickets included?

They are not included by default, because not every group wants the same stops. The cable car ticket and museum entries are paid on the spot, or we can add them to your quote in advance if you prefer everything settled before the tour.

What kind of vehicle is used?

It depends on group size: a comfortable air-conditioned sedan or VIP car for couples, a minivan for families and small groups, a minibus for larger groups. All vehicles are insured and driven by experienced local drivers.

Can I do the Almaty city tour in half a day?

Yes. A shortened private version of 4–5 hours covers Panfilov Park, the Green Bazaar and Kok Tobe. This works well if you are in Almaty on a stopover or have an evening flight. Tell us how many hours you have and we will build the route around it.

Can we combine the city tour with Medeo and Shymbulak?

On a private tour, yes — Medeo and Shymbulak are only 15–25 km from the centre. It makes for a long day, so we usually shorten the bazaar and Arbat stops. See the Medeo tour and the Shymbulak tour for details.

What happens if it rains?

Light rain does not affect the tour; we adjust the timing and move indoor stops forward. If heavy rain or fog is forecast and the Kok Tobe views would be lost, you can reschedule to another day or switch to a different tour at no extra charge.

How do I book and pay?

Send your dates and group size on WhatsApp or through the contact form. We confirm within 24 hours. Group tours usually need no deposit; private tours are confirmed with a deposit and the balance is paid on the day of the tour.

What is the cancellation policy?

Private tours can be changed or cancelled up to 72 hours before departure, with a partial refund of the deposit (70–90%) depending on costs already paid. Group tours can be changed up to 24 hours before with a full refund. If we cancel for weather or other reasons, you get a full refund or a new date.
