Best Time to Visit Kazakhstan: A Month-by-Month Guide From Almaty

By Almaty Tour KZ, a local tour operator in Almaty · Facts checked September 2026

Quick answer

The best time to visit Kazakhstan for most travellers is mid-May to June and September to mid-October. Almaty has daytime highs of about 17–28 °C, the roads to the Kolsai and Kaindy lakes are open, and the trails in Charyn Canyon are comfortable to walk. For snow and skiing, come between December and March.

Kazakhstan is the ninth-largest country in the world, so the best time to visit Kazakhstan depends on where you are going: in January, Astana averages −10 °C by day while Almaty stays close to 0 °C. This guide starts where most trips start, in Almaty and the mountains, lakes and canyons of the south-east, then covers Astana, Turkistan and Mangystau. All temperatures are long-term averages, not forecasts.

If your trip is mainly the city and its day trips, the best time to visit Almaty is May, June or September. Afternoons are warm, evenings are cool, and the main day trips, from Charyn Canyon to the mountain lakes, are all possible.

Spring in Kazakhstan: March to May

Spring arrives quickly in the south. March nights are still around freezing, but by May Almaty's afternoons reach 23 °C and the foothills turn green. April is the wettest month of the year, with 112 mm on average, so leave a spare day in your plan.

Two things make spring special. Nauryz, the spring new year, is a public holiday on 21–23 March and is celebrated across the country. And from about mid-April to early May, wild tulips flower in the steppe and foothills of the south-east. Kazakhstan has around 35 to 40 wild tulip species, including Greig's tulip and Albert's tulip, both of which bloom in the Almaty region in April.

Local note

In April and early May, rain in the city often means fresh snow higher up. The trails to the upper Kolsai lakes and around Big Almaty Lake can stay snowy into late spring, while Charyn Canyon and Altyn-Emel are at their most comfortable.

Summer in Kazakhstan: June to August

Summer is the season for the high mountains, and for hikers it is the best time to visit Kazakhstan. July is Almaty's hottest month at 30.5 °C on average, but Big Almaty Lake lies at 2,511 m and the third Kolsai lake at about 2,800 m, where the air is much cooler. This is when you can hike between the Kolsai lakes, see Big Almaty Lake without snow and walk the waterfall trails of gorges such as Turgen.

The heat matters in the lowlands. The canyon floors in Charyn and the dunes of Altyn-Emel are hot by midday, so leave Almaty early and do your walking before noon. From May to September, Kazhydromet publishes a daily mudflow-danger bulletin for the Ile-Alatau, and after heavy rain rescuers may ask people to stay out of certain gorges.

Autumn in Kazakhstan: September to November

For many visitors September is the sweet spot. It is the driest month of the year (28 mm), afternoons average 24.5 °C, and the mountain roads are still open. For a first trip that mixes canyons, lakes and the city, this is the best time to visit Kazakhstan.

October is cooler, about 17 °C by day and 5 °C at night, and brings autumn colours to the forests around Kaindy and the Ile-Alatau foothills. November is the quietest month: grey, around 8 °C by day, and usually too early for skiing, although Shymbulak sometimes opens at the end of the month.

Winter in Kazakhstan: December to February

If snow is the point of your trip, winter is the best time to visit Kazakhstan. From December to February, Almaty averages 0–3 °C by day and −6 to −8 °C at night. Snow is normal in the city and reliable in the mountains. Shymbulak ski resort, 25 km from the centre, usually runs from late November or December to mid-April; in 2025–26 its full season opened on 6 December and ran into April.

Winter is also the time for frozen Kaindy, where the tops of the sunken spruce trunks stand out of the ice, and for Charyn Canyon without the crowds. Charyn is open all year, but its paths can be icy from December to February.

Honest warning

Two things surprise winter visitors. The Medeu high-altitude skating rink has been closed for reconstruction since March 2025, with completion planned for late 2027. And on still days Almaty can sit under smog trapped by a temperature inversion; December to February are the worst months. On those days, head up into the mountains.

The best time to visit Kazakhstan outside Almaty

If your route includes other regions, plan around their very different climates.

Astana and the north

Long, hard winters: January averages −10 °C by day and −19 °C at night. Come from June to August, when highs reach about 27 °C, which is also the season for the lakes of Burabay.

Turkistan and Shymkent

The hot south. Turkistan averages 36 °C in July, so April–May and September–October are far more pleasant for the Yasawi Mausoleum and the region's other historic sites.

Mangystau and the west

Desert and chalk cliffs around Bozzhyra and Sherkala. Aktau averages 32 °C in July and the desert inland is hotter, so go in April–May or September–October.

Once you know your month, our Kazakhstan tour packages show which trips fit into 3, 5 or 7 days.

Public holidays that change your plans

Hotels, ski slopes and mountain roads get busier on long weekends. These are the dates that matter most for visitors:

  • New Year, 1–2 January: usually the busiest week of the ski season, so book hotels and ski passes early.
  • Orthodox Christmas, 7 January.
  • Nauryz, 21–23 March: the spring new year, with public celebrations across the country.
  • Republic Day, 25 October.
  • Independence Day, 16 December.

From 2027, Constitution Day moves from 30 August to 15 March, so mid-March gains an extra day off.
